Zumbro Valley Mental Health Center Plans Medical Clinic

Rochester's Zumbro Valley Mental Health Center wants to change health-care delivery for people with mental illness by offering patients a wide spectrum of health services.

The center already offers an on-site pharmacy and dental care. Now, the goal is to expand and offer primary medical care.

Often, Zumbro Valley patients mention physical-health problems during mental-health appointments, so the center plans to expand from its current outpatient services, detox center, rehabilitation and residential treatment. Click here for more.

Zumbro Valley Mental Health Center Offers Pharmacy, Dental Care

Zumbro Valley Mental Health Center has on-site services that, to date, have been rare among centers of its kind. The center on Rochester's south side, near Soccer World, serves more than 5,000 people per year and has both a dental service and a pharmacy, with plans to eventually start a primary-care service in general medicine.

"A lot of the folks that come here don't just see us as their mental-health center," said development coordinator Sean Rice. "They see us as their 'health' center." Opening a pharmacy right inside Zumbro Valley Mental Health Center has improved patient care, said CEO David Cook, himself a licensed social worker. Click here for more.

Mental Health Care Invests in Human Potential

Should we arm our teachers? Should we have armed security guards in the hallways? Should we ban the sale of ammunition clips that hold more than 10 bullets, or should that number be 7? Or 5? Should we impose a new tax on firearms and ammunition using the revenue to pay for school security? Should assault weapons be banned? Click here for more.
