“Excellence in Psychotherapy” Workshop Series

By Dr. Sam Fink

A lot has been happening with the “Excellence in Psychotherapy” workshop series. These workshops have captured a lot of attention in southeast Minnesota and well beyond. In addition to providing first-rate training for our own staff and other professionals, this workshop series is a statement that ZVMHC is committed to the use and promotion of the most effective and best researched treatment methods.

On September 26 & 27, 2005, Dr. Christine Padesky presented a workshop titled “Harnessing Hope and Reducing Relapse: Engaging Clients in Cognitive Therapy for Depression.” The workshop was very successful, and exceeded our expectations. A total of 147 people registered, including individuals from a wide array of clinical and professional settings throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. In collaboration with Guilford Publications, we operated a book sales table that displayed 15 titles, including a couple of Dr. Padesky’s books, offering buyers a 15% discount. Over 97% of the workshop attendees rated the training as meeting or exceeding their expectations.

Interest for Dr. Padesky’s next workshop on May 11-12, 2006, has been very high, as evidenced by many phone calls and email requests for information that we have received. This presentation is titled “Constructing a New Self: A New Paradigm for Cognitive Therapy of Personality Disorders,” and once again will be held in the Heritage Hall of the Kahler Grand Hotel. The registration fee includes continental breakfasts, snacks, and lunches, so attendees will not need to take the extra time to leave the workshop site in search of meals. A book sales table will again be offered with an excellent selection of relevant titles. We anticipate that this workshop will prove very popular.

Our speakers for 2007 and 2008 have now been selected. On April 23-24, 2007, Dr. R. Reid Wilson will present a workshop on the treatment of anxiety disorders. Dr. Wilson, a clinical psychologist, directs the Anxiety Disorders Treatment Program in Chapel Hill and Durham, North Carolina, and is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. He is widely known as a very engaging and entertaining speaker who emphasizes the use of evidence-based treatment methods, and he has authored several useful self-help books. On April 17-18, 2008, Dr. John C. Norcross, Professor of Psychology and Distinguished University Fellow at the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, will serve as presenter for our fifth annual workshop. Dr. Norcross has had a prominent career in the field of psychology, and is a past president of the International Society of Clinical Psychology. He will be speaking on psychotherapy relationships that work and therapist self-care, subjects about which he has written prolifically. We are indeed privileged to be able to continue the tradition of eminent presenters begun by Dr. Donald Meichenbaum and Dr. Christine Padesky, establishing Zumbro Valley Mental Health Center as a true leader in clinical training in southeastern Minnesota.

The workshop planning committee is composed of the following individuals: Dr. Paul McAlister, Dr. Sam Fink, Carol Gronseth, Cynthia Freedman, Kathryn McAlister, and Leah Holmes, and Sarah Kelling-McCormick. In addition, Dr. Michael Wilson, past ZVPS psychology intern, has continued serving with the committee, primarily as designer of the brochure.
